Those fortunate to have known, worked along with, and learned from Dr. Real knew him to be a premier psychiatrist, a leader and strong believer in the recovery model.  Dr. Real was an advocate for those living with a mental illness and their families.  Above all he was a wonderful human being.  His professional contributions were frequently recognized; he was the recipient of many prestigious awards.

Dr. Real was one of the founders of Tikvah.  He recognized the need and saw what was then known as Advocates for the Jewish Mentally Ill (AJMI) as the mechanism to promote a recovery model.  We at Tikvah will be forever grateful for his support and guidance that he offered to our organization in the beginning and throughout the rest of his life.

The Tikvah Community Program is proudly named in honor of the late Larry A. Real,

M.D. who remained central to defining and shaping its mission. This program highlights the principles that Dr. Real endorsed; supported recovery with normative lifecycle activities. The Program sponsors a holistic approach to assist in Tikvah’s mission through the recovery model and reconnection with families. Dr. Real’s legacy to enrich our community mental health endeavors will continue through the voice of Tikvah.

The Larry A. Real M.D. Tikvah Community Connection Program offers provider agencies the opportunity to engage their members in Tikvah’s stimulating services and programs.
